Blast off!!!

The children have been very interested in rockets lately. They have been building them out of the toys and materials available in the classroom.
To extend their interest in rockets, we decided to make paper-straw rockets. They were a hit!

Some of the children decided that they wanted to change the design to create better rockets. Problem solving at it's best!

" It needs wings to go faster".

"Rockets have numbers on them".

"It has Wind Power Miss!"

" Rocket Launch!"

" Mine goes high and can do a flip".

Some of the children wanted to have a race.
They wanted to find out if the wings actually made the rockets go faster.
" Hey, yours was second".
In the end, the rocket without the wings went the furthest.
"It's because it weighs too much!"

At centers, the children had to design a rocket on paper and recreate it with materials found in the classroom.

We watched this really cool video about rockets that helped us answer some of our question.

We wanted to find out more about wind power so we made some balloon rockets.

I asked the children, " What do you think makes the rocket go?"
One student said, "It's my air...I blow it in the balloon and it makes it go."

I hope this video works, so you can see these rockets in action.
The made predictions about the amount of air in the balloons to the length of the string.
One student said, " Maybe we should lift one end?"

These brothers made countdown wheels that they used every time we launched on of our balloon rockets. Very creative and a great way to practise writing your numbers too!

We have started talking about the solar system and constellations.

Here is another video we showed the kids that they wanted to share with you!
I wonder what we'll learn next!?

Walk-a-thon and read-a-thon

What a perfect day for a Walk-a-thon and Read-a-thon! Thank you once again to the wonderful volunteers for joining us and reading to us during the read-a-thon. Your time spent and reading enthusiasm is such a great memory for your little ones!

We couldn't have asked for better weather! The walk-a-thon was such an exciting time! Students enjoyed walking and jogging around the track listening to upbeat music. It was a great time to walk with siblings, cousins, friends and teachers from other classes!
